Best planted in November, this popular spice (and superfood), will grow in any frost-free area in Australia (and even in areas where frost is very light). Canna-like leaves emerge from the rhizome during spring (year round in the tropics). Tubers are mild when dug during the growing season, stronger when dug after the leaves have died down in the autumn. A very productive plant, producing a bucketful of harvestable roots from one rhizome in a single growing season. Available as red and yellow turmeric bulbs.

They arrived plump and firm, with little green buds already peeking out, and even in my light-frost spot the canna-like leaves are thriving. I dug up a fat, fragrant rhizome this autumn and the kitchen smells incredible whenever I grate it fresh.

Planted these rhizomes in November as instructed and they’ve thrived in my frost-free backyard, now producing lush canna-like leaves. The turmeric itself is vibrant and fresh, much more aromatic than the dried powder I’m used to.

I was pleasantly surprised how healthy and firm the rhizomes looked when they arrived—no mush or mold at all. They’re already showing shoots after just a few weeks in the ground, which is promising. Definitely worth it for anyone in a frost-free area.
