Category: Plants

Originally from the Balkans, Turkey and Greece, the Valonia Oak loves Mediterranean climates. It thrives in well-aerated soils with good drainage where mycelium pathways are encouraged to flourish. In the right conditions, it can produce over 100kg of beautiful acorns. The large cupules contain substances used for tanning, hence were much sought-after by leather tanners. Cunnack's Valonia Oak Plantation in Central Victoria is of scientific and horticultural significance being the first planting in Australia in the 1870s. The lush green, deciduous leaves are fire retardant. Medium growth rate.

Miles I. ★★★★★

The mycelium in the soil has really taken off since I put this sapling in a well-drained spot. It’s growing faster than I expected for a Mediterranean oak, and the leaves have a nice leathery texture.

Owen R. ★★★★★

I’ve been planting it in my clay pot with extra perlite, and the drainage is exactly as promised—the roots are already spreading nicely. The love for Mediterranean climates really shows; it handled our dry summer without any fuss.

Steven A. ★★★★★

Planted this in my garden with well-aerated soil and it’s already showing vigorous new growth. The drainage is perfect for its Mediterranean needs. Thrilled to see the mycelium pathways forming just as described.
