Category: Plants

Endemic to the valleys of California, European settlers were reminded of home when they first saw this noble oak with its deeply lobed leaves. Thriving in areas with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, it is adaptable to a range of soil types, and even copes with brief periods of inundation. Its dull green leaves are aromatic and turn from yellow to light orange in autumn. This extremely long lived oak has thick deeply furrowed bark and produces large, long acorns. Frost and drought tolerant. Its brief period of dormancy, re-leafing in August, is a distinguishing feature from other deciduous oaks. Fast growth rate.

Emma ★★★★★

Planted this in a spot that gets full summer sun and it's already putting out new growth after just a few weeks. The deeply lobed leaves really do capture that classic oak silhouette.

Alexander ★★★★★

The deeply lobed leaves are even more striking in person, and it's been thriving in our dry summer heat with just weekly watering. I can already picture how majestic this California native will look in a few years.

Grace Z. ★★★★★

The deeply lobed leaves are exactly what I was hoping for, and it's already showing new growth after just a few weeks in the ground. Handled our first heat wave without any wilting.
