Pink Silk Floss Tree
Category: Plants
The spectacular Silk Floss Tree, formerly known as Chorisia speciosa, is a highly ornamental medium-sized tree that deserves a place in any garden. Its distinctive bottle-shaped trunk with its thorny exterior provides an intriguing textural element, while the canopy of vibrant pink and white orchid-like flowers are a sight to behold in late summer and autumn. This South American native copes well in our dry climate, being drought and coast tolerant once established. The attractive seed pods of Ceiba speciosa produce a silk-like substance that was historically used as stuffing for pillows, mattresses and life jackets up until the advent of synthetic fibres.
