20th Century also known as Nijisseiki by the Japanese who introduced this pear to the world early last century blends an apple-like texture with the taste of a pear. As with most things out of Japan the tree is a neat specimen with a symmetrical habit. Best eaten fresh when tree ripened but can be used for juice when the crop is too heavy to consume. Self-fertile, although Williams or Beurre Bosc increase pollination. Members see our fact sheet here.

Henry ★★★★★

The texture is exactly what I hoped for—crunchy like an apple but with that sweet pear taste coming through. Got a box of these and every single one was perfectly ripe and juicy.

Ellie I. ★★★★★

I’d never had a pear that crunches like an apple before, but the Nijisseiki’s texture is exactly that—crisp and refreshing. The balance of sweetness with that subtle pear flavor makes it a perfect snack for lunch.

Avery B. ★★★★★

The crunch when I first bit into it was genuinely apple-like, but the juice that followed was all pear sweetness—it’s a strange, pleasant mash-up that lives up to the Nijisseiki name. Definitely the most refreshing pear I’ve had this season.
