Category: Plants

An 1807 Belgian heirloom, this is the quintessential fresh-eating pear that melts in your mouth like sorbet. The best flavour comes when ripened at room temperature, so supermarket offerings are not a patch on home-ripened fruit. Elegant elongated russet-brown pears with rich sweet, slightly grainy flesh to enjoy fresh, baked or poached. A late-season crop, which is pollinated by Red Beurre D'Anjou, Williams and Red Williams. Grafted on Pyrus Calleryana rootstock.

I let a couple sit on the counter for a few days and their flavor deepened beautifully, prov

I was skeptical about a pear that needs room-temperature ripening, but after waiting a few days the texture was incredible—truly melts like sorbet, nothing like the hard supermarket ones.

The first one I tried was so meltingly tender I actually had to eat it over the sink. They're nothing like the hard, flavorless pears from the grocery store.
