Make the move to a more sustainable life by planning your own food forest for a South Australian climate.  Chris Day, our experienced permaculture teacher, will cover all South Australian growing conditions, hills, plains (including coastal) and arid.  Growing a diverse range of plants in different layers reduces weeds, minimises pests and drastically reduces maintenance, whilst providing a variety of edible harvests throughout the year. Food forests can be grown on different scales depending on the size of your property, from the smallest backyard to rural acreage.

During this workshop you will learn:|

  • The best location of your food forest
  • How best to irrigate your food forest
  • What to consider when choosing your canopy trees
  • Making sure you plant what your household likes to eat
  • How to prepare your location for a food forest
  • How to maintain your food forest

Note to participants:

Please bring any maps and diagrams and or pictures you have available for your food forest site. You can use a site plan, a Google Earth aerial shot or rough plan including the dimensions of your proposed Food Forest area.

The Workshop will be held in the Goodman Lecture Theatre, Goodman Building at the Adelaide Botanic Garden. The nearest gate is on Hackney Road.

I’ve been wanting to design a food forest for years, and Chris Day’s South Australian climate guidance makes this feel totally doable. The way he breaks down which species work together in our local soils is exactly what I needed.

Finally got my hands on this and the planting calendar for South Australia alone is worth it — I've already marked out where my first fruit trees will go. It's packed with practical tips that actually suit our climate.

Chris Day's breakdown of South Australian-specific growing conditions made planning my backyard so much easier, and I love that the course covers everything from canopy trees to ground covers in one go. It’s packed with practical details I can actually use.
