Category: Seeds

Named for the Cherokee ancestors or Dr John Wyche who shared this seed with Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) in the US in honour of the fallen. This bean was carried over the Trail of Tears, the infamous winter death march from the Smoky Mountains to Oklahoma (1838-39) that left a trail of 4,000 graves. SSE shared this important variety with Diggers and we can now offer this bean to our members across Australia. In our trials it has proven itself to be a long harvest bean, producing a consistent crop from 67 days of sowing right through autumn and into winter. Suitable for eating fresh while young or allowing to dry when mature.

Abigail N. ★★★★★

The story behind these beans is what sold me, and the fact they carry such history is humbling. I planted them last spring and the vines were vigorous, producing a good harvest of dark, pretty pods. Knowing I'm growing a piece of living heritage makes the whole experience feel special.

Madison ★★★★★

The seeds germinated reliably in about a week, and the deep purple pods are gorgeous against the green leaves. I love that I'm growing a piece of living history in my garden.

Isabella ★★★★★

I planted these in early June and the vines grew fast, and the deep purple pods are striking against the leaves. The story behind them makes it feel special, but they’re also just a solid, reliable bean for the garden.
