Category: Seeds

This traditional open-pollinated variety was introduced in the USA in 1919 and made its way to Australia in 1929, where it is still a garden favourite today. An improved form of 'Martha Washington', 'Mary Washington' was considered the most popular asparagus in America for almost a century. Available as both male and female plants, the female plants will set seed if allowed to flower, while male plants usually set more spears throughout the season.

Emily G. ★★★★★

These seeds germinated reliably in just over two weeks, and the seedlings look strong and healthy. It's nice to grow a classic, open-pollinated variety with such a long history in Australian gardens.

Harper B. ★★★★★

Tucked these into a sunny bed in early spring and the classic 1919 pedigree shows—sturdy, uniform spears with that old-fashioned flavor you can’t get from hybrids. This open-pollinated variety is a keeper for anyone wanting to save seed year after year.

Stella H. ★★★★★

The seeds germinated in about 10 days in our raised bed, and the ferny fronds grew quickly. It's nice knowing this variety has been a reliable garden staple for nearly a century.
