Category: Seeds

A compact and upright cultivar that flowers in just 30 weeks from sowing. The flower heads produce a heart or choke with a delicious smooth buttery texture. Bred in California by crossing an Italian artichoke with a French artichoke, the result is this open-pollinated, reliable artichoke with minimal, if any thorns. While breeding started in 1981, 'Imperial Star' did not make it into the market until 1991, and has grown in popularity ever since. Cut back after flowering for increased yields in the following years. Offsets can be divided to propagate new plants.

Victoria B. ★★★★★

I’ve got a small raised bed, and these compact plants fit perfectly without taking over. Harvested the first tender artichokes just shy of 30 weeks, and the buttery heart was incredible.

Julian ★★★★★

These 'Imperial Star' seeds germinated quickly and the plants stayed nice and compact just as described. I was pleasantly surprised by the buttery texture of the first artichoke heart I harvested. Definitely worth the wait for a homegrown treat.

Ruby X. ★★★★★

The 30-week wait felt long, but the first heart I steamed had that smooth, buttery texture the description promised—totally worth it. The compact growth kept it tidy in my raised bed, no flopping over even in wind.
